Abstract: Thanks to many recent advances in the solar industry solar generators can now do the work that diesel and gasoline generators do.

Thanks to many recent advances in the solar industry solar generators can now do the work that diesel and gasoline generators do.  Solar generators do not run out of fuel, require petrol or make any noise.

What is a Solar Generator?
Solar generatorA solar generator is a device that converts solar energy (sunlight) into electrical energy.   It is made up of several parts. For example, there is the apparatus to collect solar energy (sunlight) which is called the solar panel. Some solar generators have a built in solar panel in the roof of the generator which is fully adjustable to pivot towards the sun. Another important component is a deep cycle battery into which the energy is stored until it is ready to be used and so that energy is still available at night after the sun goes down. An inverter is also another component.  The inverter is necessary to convert the power stored in the battery so that the power can be used by most appliances.
Determining the appropriate strength of an inverter for a solar power system is a fairly simple task and a solar energy consultant should be able to assist.

What sort of appliances can it power?
A solar generator can be small enough to power such things as lighting, TV, fans, etc.  or it can be a large advanced system that powers a building.

How long will the solar generator supply power without sun shining on the solar panel?
This depends on how much power you draw from your solar generator, the size of the batteries and how low you want your batteries to get. Good Solar generators have an indicator level to keep you informed.

What type of maintenance is involved?
The solar panels should be cleaned regularly to avoid build up of dust. Just spray the panels with water. The batteries can be kept alive for years with regular maintenance.

Can solar generators work alongside diesel/petrol generators and PHCN?
Yes.  Aside from sunlight solar generators can be charged by PHCN and they can work alongside diesel/petrol generators.

How cost effective are solar generators in comparison with diesel/petrol generators?
Even though the original cost for a solar generator may be higher than some petroleum generators, it will significantly save you money because the unit itself will last longer, it requires much less maintenance and does not have the usual mechanical problems of conventional generators and it does not rely on expensive fuel.

What are some of the benefits of using a solar generator?
There are numerous benefits.

  1. 1. Depending on the size, it can enable the user to remain unaffected by power failure.
  2. It is a simple and reliable service day and night.
  3. The source of the power (sunlight) is free thus saving you a lot of money in comparison to expenditure on diesel/petrol for conventional generators.
  4. No dangerous fumes or fire risks
  5. No health related hazards and you sleep better while enjoying 24/7 electricity
  6. Zero noise pollution compared to generators
  7. The useful life of a solar unit can exceed 20 years, making solar technology a cost effective, energy solution in the long term as well as the short term
  8. Totally silent operations and no fumes
  9. Automatic change over
